Ninja Odyssey for Intellivision Mini-Review!!
In this mini-review, I wanted to draw attention to this really cool new Intellivision homebrew game, Ninja Odyssey, developed by Kai Magazine and published by Elektronite. It’s a really neat side-scrolling platforming Nina game.
It is available for purchase over at naberhood.com. You can purchase the cartridge only for $40, the cartridge plus the ROM is $50, or the ROM only for $20. The ROM offers is an encrypted LTO flash version tied to your specific LTO flash cartridge ID. If you do buy the ROM only, you will receive a $10 discount on the complete in box copy of the game, which was intended to be released this summer in June. They have said in the forums if they sell at least 140 copies, there will be a CIB run with manuals and overlays.
In the game, you play as a ninja, Kasuhiro Kun. Your homeland has been invaded by three ancestral ghosts which are “draining the life force of all humans in order to come to life”. It’s up to you to defeat the evil ghosts and save the village.
This game reminds me a lot of the Sydney Hunter series but with a few key differences. In Sydney Hunter the Sacred Tribe for Intellivision, there is no left and right smooth scrolling. Also, you do seem to have more ground to cover though, being able to traverse many screens not only left and right but also up and down. However, in Ninja Odyssey, there appear to be a lot more obstacles thrown your way and you have the ability to throw shuriken’s or ninja stars to destroy your enemies and objects in your path.
In Ninja Odyssey, you have a green life force indicator bar at the top of the screen. Picking up hearts will increase your life force while most other objects will either decrease your life force or even end your life. You are granted three lives before the game ends.
If you possess enough skill to make it far enough, you will reach a BOSS character or ghost. Should you make it past the ghost, the difficulty ramps up slightly when play continues.
You control your ninja by using the disc and utilizing the side buttons to jump and fire. Depressing the jump button longer will make your ninja jump higher.
Anyhow, I am enjoying playing the game so far. I think it’s nicely implemented, fun, and challenging to get far into the game.
Nina Odyssey is forgiving in that it will let you continue from where you left off rather than having to start all the way over from the beginning once the game ends. The gameplay is rewarding since it’s constantly changing things up including the background environments, challenges, and obstacles required to complete the game. This game has exceeded my expectations so far. It is quite impressive. The graphics and sound effects are terrific. So check it out.
