Cocktail (1988)

This film was a trip to a re-watch.  Mostly to see the young Tom Cruise and 80s themed music.  I did see it when it first came out, but of course, I had no recollection of what actually happened, other than the bar tendering scenes.  But this film was not about bar tendering.  It was instead about relationships and trust between men and between women.   It also stars a very young Tom Cruise.  Last year I re-watched “Top Gun”, which was an 80 fueled drama, of course also staring at Mr. Cruise.  The films did have a few similarities.  They were both from the eighties and both have the cheesy 80s music.  I temporarily forgot just how good looking Tom Cruise was when he was young.  His good looks helped him to bag several women, in this film.  His coworker in the bar dated rich women exclusively and ended up making a bet with Cruise that he couldn’t do the same.  Only this time it was bad timing since he was involved with a young woman played by Elizabeth Shue.  Of course, she finds out immediately and goes back home without him.  When he tries to win her back, he confesses why he did what did.  The discussion became you left me over money?  A few scenes later he finds out she came from a rich background and feels really stupid.  The ending of this film was great, hitting at your heartstrings.  I would call this film a classic and definitely helped shape Cruise into the fine veteran actor he has become. I have not studied all of his films, but his acting was terrific and I highly recommend it.
