Arbitrage

I saw this film yesterday listed on Xbox live movies and also once I found out Roger Ebert had it on his top films of 2012 I decided I had to give it a shot.  It stars Richard Gere as a billionaire businessman who was having an affair.  He was also trying to finalize the sale of his business, absolving him of a large debt while setting up him and his family for life.   What he didn’t count on was falling asleep at the wheel, killing his mistress.  What’s a poor billionaire to do.  He couldn’t let it get out that he’s been in a fatal accident or worse yet, let it out that the woman killed was the woman he was having an affair with, he couldn’t let that happen. This would ruin the sale of his business.  So he set a plan in action.  He calls up one of his deceased colleague’s sons who just happens to be black and gets a ride out of dodge.  The rest of the film is about covering up this accident and avoiding both himself getting in trouble and the man who helped him get in trouble.  To me, this film is totally believable that this could have happened.  I think that’s what the director was trying to get across if you’re rich enough you can nearly get away with anything.  But the detective in this case played by Tim Roth was bound and determined to make sure he paid his for this crime, too determined.

I was looking at the critic’s reviews on IMDb on this movie and a lot of people didn’t like the ending of this film. But I did like the ending.

Spoilers…

Near the end of the film, his wife blackmails him saying basically he had better give a large donation to some charitable foundation that she set up or she was going to tell the police everything she knew about his whereabouts the morning of the accident.  The film ends with the scene with Richard gears character accepting an award apparently from the foundation with his wife and daughter in the audience. At that point, you know he must’ve settled with her keep her quiet and basically he gets away with it, and the credits roll.

It had very good acting throughout, it was very entertaining and I would highly recommend this film.
