Pacific Rim

Watched this film at the Imax theatre in Ontario.  Unfortunately, it was in 3D, but that did not detract too much from the film.  I’ve said it before, but the upgraded sound, seating, and screen made all the difference.  Especially the sound.  It’s hard to put into words how much the sound effects improve the experience.  Anyhow, this film was marketed as robots versus sea monsters, and pretty much that’s what you get.  The main star of the film was Charlie Hunham mostly known from the very popular TV series,  “The Sons of Anarchy“.  He plays the part of one of the robot drivers.  The story goes something like this.   Sometime in the near future, planet Earth comes under attack by these massive sea monsters.  In order to combat these creatures effectively, mankind created a force of giant robots.  It takes two people who are mind-melded to operate one of these giant robots.  The film was directed by Guillermo Del Torro, drawing heavily from the Japanese subculture.  I think he did a good job of possibly creating an entirely new film genre.  This movie reminded me of the old Japanese Godzilla films, except done right with today’s special effects and it worked.
