For me, this was a must-see film for 2013. If stars one of my favorite actors, Leonardo Dicaprio, is directed by Martin Scorsese, and has been getting a whole lot of critical acclaim. Let me say this film was pretty darn good and in my opinion, this the very best performance of Dicaprio’s career. The film was very long, three hours, but it didn’t really feel that long. Yeah, a few scenes did stretch a bit longer than necessary, I’m talking to you quaalude scene. It also starred Jonah Hill as a sort of Dicaprios partner in crime. To me, he delivered a solid performance but I thought his cigarette play made it rather obvious that he is not a smoker in real life. Dicaprio’s wife was played by the very beautiful Margot Robbie, who also delivered a solid performance. There was a sort of cameo performance put in by Matthew McConaughey in the beginning, who was very interesting and funny.
This film contained a lot of sex scenes, a lot of bad language, and a bit of violence as well. In fact, I read on the internet, for a three-hour film it set the record for the number of ‘f‘ words. I don’t understand why it was not rated NC-17. Many of the scenes were “over the top“, but that is what makes them memorable. Having said that the performance put in by Dicaprio made it all worth it.
