I had this film sitting around the house for at least a month, from Netflix. I am not sure why I was avoiding it. Maybe because it is a horror flick and I had low expectations. However today I finally watched it and I am glad that I did. As a fan of the horror flick genre, I think this film just barely scratched the surface of horror. I like these types of horror films best. The ones that are not strictly “hack and slash”. I also really liked the premise of this film (not that I would ever want it to happen in real life), a future society where on one day a year, it is purge day. A day in which people can lawfully go out and purge kill anybody they want. That is what this film was about. It starred Ethan Hawke as a wealthy homeowner who sold all the security systems in the neighborhood. It also stared Lena Headey from the ‘Terminator’ TV series, who played his wife. This story takes a turn when their son, turns off the security system in order to save a poor wounded black man. Big mistake… This dude ends up being the focus of a manhunt by dozens of purgers… Long story short, this is the way horror films should be made.
